Visit to the Peace Palace, The Hague

It is well known that the Peace Palace (Vredespaleis) in The Hague houses the International Court of Justice. Less known is the palace’s “Japanese Room” that contains nine exquisite Japanese silk tapestries (gobelins) that were commissioned by the imperial Japanese government from the imperial textile firm of Kawashima Jinbei in Kyoto. This large suite of work, illustrating seasonal flowers and birds, was designed by the celebrated Kyoto nihonga (Japanese-style) painter Kikuchi Hōbun (1862–1918).  Read more
