The annual General Members Meeting will take place on Sunday June 16. The meeting will be followed by a lecture from Dr. Tom Mes, who teaches Japanese cinema, media, and popular culture at Leiden University. Dr. Mes will speak on the celebrated filmmaker Ozu Yasujirō (1903–1963). Although Ozu is often recognized for his treatment of themes relating to Japanese traditions, his early work from the 1920s and 1930s reveals a totally different cinematic side, one characterized by slapstick, flappers, samurai, and gangsters. The lecture offers a glimpse into Ozu’s career and examines how his attitude toward war censorship impacted his later methods and style, leading to masterpieces such as Late Spring (Banshun, 1949) and Tokyo Story (Tōkyō monogatari, 1953).
The General Members Meeting and lecture by Dr. Mes will take place in the main auditorium of the Museum Volkenkunde, Steenstraat 1, 2312 BS in Leiden.
